Eric ‘the Eel’ Moussambani should never have won his 100-metre freestyle swimming heat at the millennial summer games. The athlete from Equatorial Guinea had never seen an Olympic sized pool before he took to the starting blocks for the race – a race he would complete in a historically slow 1:52.72 having become exhausted following the first length of the 50-metre pool. But both his competitors had already been disqualified having been penalised for false starts. The Eel quickly gained a fan club but sadly his time was too slow for him to advance to the next round of the competition.
